Intimate - Pukeko
Close-up of a purple swamphen, known in New Zealand as the Pukeko and in Australia as the Australian Swamphen.
About the bird
The purple swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) is a denizen of swamps, poorly drained pastureland and lakesides. Although thought to be self-introduced a thousand years ago or less it is one of New Zealand’s most iconic native birds.
